Renew Home Logic is a 100% Kamloops owned home-based business started in 2026 by Nathan and Travis Johnson- two brothers who happened to become smart home hobbyists.
We started out with just a few smart home devices to solve certain problems: a smart plug to handle a sump pump to prevent flooding, and a couple of smart light bulbs in locations where switches were hard to reach.
As we added more and more devices; the door bell camera provided by our phone company, the adjustable holiday light strip in the front window; we started to become overwhelmed and annoyed by the number of apps required to run all these devices. After some research we found the solution: free open-source software designed to bring all these controls into one environment.
After installing Home Assistant in both of our homes, we were amazed with the number of devices that we already had that could be integrated, either as-is or with minimal additional hardware: a smart thermostat, some speaker systems, and even a garage door opener.
At this point, we were both hooked. We started tinkering, modifying, and testing new tools and systems. We also spoke about our smart homes at length: showing off the greenhouse monitoring dashboard here, demonstrating our automations there.
Our friends, family, and colleagues were all impressed with the ease and convenience, and so at their urging we started Renew Home Logic so that we could offer smart home server and device installation and setup to everyone!
We understand the importance of supporting small businesses and supporting local.
When choosing suppliers and service providers, we will search first for a local option based in Kamloops. If that's not possible, we'll look for a Canadian option, and if that's not possible, we'll prioritize small businesses and/or businesses that employ Canadians.
Where possible, we will support businesses and individuals who share our belief in free open-source software. Any novel solutions or ideas that we create through the operations of Renew Home Logic will be re-shared with the Home Assistant community.
